The title of an article in the New York Times published on April 13, 2009 read “Nasal Irrigation Can Ease Allergy Symptoms.”  The article cited three studies that found cold and allergy symptoms were eased and medication needs were reduced – if not completely eliminated – through use of a neti pot.

Speaking as a professional opera singer, I can attest to the validity of these claims.  The back stage of theaters are often full of dust and, sometimes, even roaches and rodents.  Musical and non-musical ensembles often share ill-ventilated and confined dressing rooms.  Such is the breeding ground for triggering allergies and illness.

Before using nasal irrigation, I had frequently been diagnosed with sinus infections and related illness.  However, since incorporating nasal irrigation into my daily routine, such illness has been fewer and father between.

My morning ritual includes the use of NeilMed Pharmaceuticals’ “Sinus Rinse” while taking a steamy shower.  This product includes a nasal irrigator, premixed packets of pH balanced sodium chloride and sodium bicarbonate mixture and a dock to park my nasal irrigator after use.  You may be surprised to hear that even when I do not feel particularly congested, I still see rather graphic results after using the irrigator.

Please take a moment to read the New York Times article and discover less congestion in your life through nasal irrigation.

For this “Operatic Minute,” I am Rose Guccione from OperaGram.com.
