Jean, happy birthday to you from Linda
whom you have known since high school days.
Oboe, piano, bell choir
is there nothing more you play?

Linda recalls you met looking for a room.
Since there’d been just one left, you played duets.
Your life was full of jazz, choir, and Mozart.
That music would become your livelihood was no huge bet.

She also told me you are really Scots:
Even as a little girl you were in the Feast of Haggis.
And you are really good sending cards.
Holidays like Halloween you don’t miss.

Some of the memories she likes the best
involve the phone calls and hangman playing,
driving your parents’ old Merecedes,
and on her wedding day you bridesmade-ing.

Jean, happy birthday to you from Linda
whom you have known since high school days.
Though on different paths of life
you still bring a smile to her face.
